San Diego Woman Comes Home to No Water Service

Water was bubbling up from the ground and puddling, spreading across the yard. The neighbors noticed, but Sherilin wasn’t at her San Diego home to see that she had a major problem on her hands.

“Well, I was on vacation and I wasn’t home,” she said. “So, someone noticed the water and they were able to shut off the water.”

When she arrived home, she had no water service to her home. Her utility reached out to her and let her know that she had a problem with her water service line and needed to address it.

With no water service and coming home after a vacation to what could potentially be a big bill, Sherilin might have found herself in a bit of a predicament.

Luckily, she had enrolled in several emergency home repair plans from Service Line Warranties of America (SLWA), including a plan to help cover her exterior water service line, after she had received information about her service line responsibilities from SLWA through her public utility.

So, instead of searching for a plumber and figuring out how to pay for the work, Sherilin called HomeServe instead. HomeServe dispatched a local, licensed and insured contractor, Frassica Inc., to assess her water service line.

“There wasn’t anything that could have been done better.”

Once the plumber arrived to assess the line, he quickly realized that he wouldn’t be able to test the water line for leaks because the shut-off valve was so corroded. Ordinarily, such a repair would cost Sherilin almost $600 to replace the valve and rebuild the inlet, but, since she had a plan from HomeServe, Frassica was able to replace it at no cost to her.

And replacing the valve solved her problem – it was the corroded valve that had been causing the leak, not a damaged water service line. Just to be sure, however, the plumber tested the line and found no leaks.

“The plumber was great,” Sherilin said. “He did install a new shut-off valve, because it was old, leaking and not working right.”

Sherilin appreciated the clear and open communication from HomeServe and Frassica and that her home was treated with respect by the plumber, who diligently cleaned up after himself.

“There wasn’t anything that could have been done better,” she said.
