Kim D. of Richmond Virginia was headed into her house after a day of work when a puddle of water at the bottom of her lawn near the street caught her eye.
“I really didn’t recall ever seeing it before, but it had been raining so much the previous few days,” said Kim. “So, initially, I didn’t think much of it and continued my night.”
After that day, Kim forgot about the puddle in the drainage ditch on her lawn. That is, until she returned from a trip, and saw that the size of the puddle had tripled. And after going through the mail, she received while she was gone, she noticed her water bill was $500 for the previous month; more than double its usual amount.
Because of the inflated water bill and the location of the puddle, Kim immediately was suspicious of a problem with the home’s exterior water line. Luckily, she had it covered under a repair plan from HomeServe she subscribed to over a decade ago introduced to her by her utility.
“A while back, I learned about exterior water and sewer line coverage from HomeServe through a letter I received in the mail,” Kim said. “My home wasn’t new at the time, and I knew that there were plenty of trees on my property that had the potential to cause issues down the line – so I figured, why not enroll?”
Kim gave HomeServe’s North America operations center a call and was immediately connected to an agent who coordinated a local and reliable member of our contractor network, McAtee Plumbing, LLC to visit the property. A technician came with leak detection equipment in tow, designed to efficiently find the source of the problem along Kim’s water line, as it was over 60 feet long. It wasn’t long before the leak was detected, and the repair on the damaged water line began.
“Basically, a tree root had damaged the water line in one place, which resulted in around five feet of the line needing to be repaired,” said Kim. “It was a fairly straightforward process, and I felt comfortable and informed throughout.”

After the water line was fixed, Kim saw her water bill drop down to where it belonged. Ultimately, the repair saved her over $1,400.
“I have no plans to get rid of this repair plan,” said Kim. “I have seen family members suffer more severe situations with no coverage that cost them thousands because they needed a line replacement, so I would rather be safe than sorry. I’m very happy with this service – it works.”
