Are You Truly Heat Wave Ready? Poll Uncovers Surprising Gaps

July 17, 2025 – With over 90% of Americans having faced a heatwave, many believe they’re well-prepped for sizzling summers. However, the HomeServe Heat Readiness poll shows a striking disconnect between how prepared people feel versus the reality of their actions.
And heatwaves are here to stay. The World Meteorological Organization warns, "with further global warming, we can expect an increase in the intensity, frequency and duration of heatwaves,” amplifying economic, health and environmental risks.
The Confidence Illusion
The poll reveals that Americans rate their confidence in handling heatwaves at an average of 4 out of 5. But dig a little deeper, and the challenges tell a different story. A third of respondents cite skyrocketing cooling costs as their biggest heat-related worry, far outweighing general discomfort. Meanwhile, nearly 38% of respondents reported having experienced or knowing someone who suffered from heat-related health issues such as heatstroke or dehydration.
Cooling Costs Take Center Stage
It’s no surprise that air conditioning is America’s summer lifeline. However, the poll highlights a problem that’s chilling in its implications. While 78% of respondents routinely change their AC filters, only 40% invest in professional system tune-ups. This oversight could be sabotaging their cooling efficiency and inflating their energy bills.
Randy Boutte, HVAC Training Manager at HomeServe, stresses the importance of routine maintenance. “A simple tune-up can improve your AC’s efficiency by up to 20%,” he explains. “Tasks like clearing dirt-clogged coils, checking refrigerant and inspecting ductwork ensure your system works smarter, not harder.” Translation? Lower energy bills and fewer breakdowns during those blistering heatwaves.
Skipping routine maintenance not only drains wallets but could also lead to costly repairs. A neglected system might struggle when temperatures soar, leaving you sweltering on the hottest days of the year. HomeServe estimates that the cost of a compressor replacement could exceed $1,500, whereas annual tune-ups typically cost under $200.
Health and Community Awareness Gaps
Beyond financial concerns, extreme heat carries significant health risks. Despite 97% professing to be very familiar or somewhat familiar of these risks, few Americans are taking proactive steps to protect themselves. For example, only half know where their nearest cooling center is located. These vital community resources can be lifesaving for those without reliable access to air conditioning.
While 70% of respondents admitted to making small behavior changes after experiencing prior heatwaves, many measures are incremental. Simple steps like stocking water, wearing light-colored clothing and timing outdoor activities to cooler parts of the day can make a significant health difference. Yet overly surface-level changes mean many remain unprepared when the next heatwave strikes.
What You Can Do
The good news? You can drastically improve your readiness with a few straightforward actions. Boutte recommends scheduling an AC tune-up to ensure your system is running at maximum efficiency, keeping you cool while curbing those dreaded high energy bills.
Additionally, start sealing any gaps around windows and doors, install thermal curtains and use programmable thermostats strategically to save up to 10% on energy costs annually. Take safety into your own hands by staying hydrated, using cooling devices like portable fans and sharing awareness of community resources with neighbors.
Closing the Readiness Gap
The HomeServe Heat Readiness poll is a wake-up call. Confidence alone isn’t enough to tackle the rising tide of heatwaves. Through better AC maintenance, smarter energy habits and leveraging local resources, Americans can stay safe and save money.
This summer, as the temperatures climb, ask yourself one question: Are you confident in your heatwave readiness—or truly prepared? The difference could save your wallet and your well-being.
